Michelle Baum
For 20 years, Michelle Baum has developed and successfully executed communications programs for privately-held and publicly-traded companies spanning technology and consumer sectors. She has launched new companies, participated in acquisition and IPO activities, and generated renewed interest for fading businesses. She is the founder and CEO of Moxie & Mettle Communications and Marketing Firm, and also an Assistant Professor in the Journalism and Technical Communication Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where she leads the public relations degree program.

Jessica Bernacki, PhD
Dr. Jessica Bernacki is a licensed clinical psychologist in the Department of Medicine at the UCLA Medicine-Pediatrics Comprehensive Care Center and on the Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service at the UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica. Her clinical, teaching, and research interests focus on the delivery of evidence-based behavioral health services in the primary care setting and coping with pediatric medical illness. It is from her experiences working in pediatric inpatient and outpatient care at UCLA and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, as well as having her own two children, that have motivated her to help improve the experience of youth receiving medical interventions.

Gwen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania with a dual degree. She holds a B.S. in Finance from the Wharton School and a B.A. in European History from the College of Arts and Sciences. Penn awarded her the Alfred A. Berg Award for Academic and Extracurricular Achievement. She earned her M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She has served on several national boards, including the of University of Pennsylvania Trustees’ Council of Penn Women and on the Executive Advisory Board of FIRST, which promotes the study of math and science through robotics competitions. He has received major awards including the Donaghue Investigator Award, as well as the Mayday Pain and Society Fellowship. His division was designated a Center of Clinical Excellence by the American Pain Society in 2014. Dr. Zempsky is also a co-editor of the Oxford Textbook of Pediatric Pain.

William Zempsky, MD, MPH

Melanie Noel, PhD, RPsych
Dr. Noel’s expertise is on children’s memories for pain and co-occurring mental health issues and pediatric chronic pain. Her work is rooted in a bio-psycho-social-structural understanding of pain, with an increasing emphasis on the social and structural drivers (and solutions!) of this rising, global epidemic. She published guiding conceptual models of children’s pain memory development, co-occurring PTSD and chronic pain, fear-avoidance, and validation (>220 peer-reviewed publications). In recognition of her contributions to advancing knowledge of the psychological and social aspects of children’s pain, Dr. Noel received early career awards from the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the Canadian Pain Society, the American Pain Society, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Society of Pediatric Psychology. She was named Avenue Magazine Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 (Class of 2017), a Killam Emerging Research Leader (2020), and holds the inaugural the Killam Memorial Emerging Leader Chair (2021-2026). Recently, she was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists.Dr. Noel is passionate about partnering with people with lived experience to transform how we understand, show up for, and treat people with pain. She is an advocate for the use of developmentally tailored interventions for pediatric pain management and serves on committees to promote and implement evidence-based interventions within her children’s hospital and beyond. As an evidence lead on the Help Eliminate Pain in Kids and Adults team, Dr. Noel co-authored clinical practice guidelines for pain and fear management for vaccine injections. Many of these recommendations were adopted by the World Health Organization.

Dr van Tilburg was appointed to the Rome IV and Rome V committee which established diagnostic criteria for pediatric Disorders of Gut Brain Interaction including Functional Abdominal Pain Disorders. She is a previous elected council member for the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association and a current elected council member of the North American Society For Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition.

Dr. Laura Madoo
Dr. Laura Madoo is a general pediatrician practicing in Northern Virginia. She received her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Madoo completed her pediatric residency at Inova Children’s Hospital where she was selected to serve as Chief Resident. She remains involved in the teaching of new pediatricians as the Continuity Clinic Director for the Pediatric Residency Program at Inova.
Dr. Madoo serves as teaching faculty at the state level for the Virginia Mental Health Access Program (VMAP) and nationally through the REACH Institute. Dr. Laura Madoo is board certified in pediatrics and has special interests in mental health and complex care.
Dr. Madoo and her husband, Brent, live in Northern Virginia with their two children – Ella (age 8) and Miles (age 6). She says that Miles is her “superhero.” He has a very complicated medical history that has included over a dozen surgeries, several prolonged hospitalizations, and countless specialists across multiple hospitals. Being a part of his medical journey, as both a mom and a pediatrician, transformed Dr. Madoo’s care of her patients. She enjoys working together with families to help navigate through the complexities of the medical system and to empower families to advocate for their child’s care and comfort.

Dr. Laura Madoo is a general pediatrician practicing in Northern Virginia. She received her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Madoo completed her pediatric residency at Inova Children’s Hospital where she was selected to serve as Chief Resident. She remains involved in the teaching of new pediatricians as the Continuity Clinic Director for the Pediatric Residency Program at Inova.
Dr. Madoo serves as teaching faculty at the state level for the Virginia Mental Health Access Program (VMAP) and nationally through the REACH Institute. Caitlin Kilgore is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who specializes in working with children with developmental delays (including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, Tourette syndrome, ADHD and anxiety). She received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Denver while working with foster children with reactive attachment disorder. Her career has consisted primarily of clinic and home based work supporting families from a system-based perspective backed by the science of behavior modification. Caitlin is currently the Senior Partner Clinician at Soar Autism Center in Denver, Colorado.

She was an invited member of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Pain Care, Research, and Education and co-author of the IOM report on Transforming Pain in America. She has received many awards, including a 2009 Clinical Center of Excellence in Pain Management Award for her program from the APS. She was President of the Special Interest Group on Pain in Childhood in IASP and past-Secretary of the APS. She was an invited member of the U.S. Steering Committee guiding NIH on directions for pain research, an invited member of the FDA Special Committee on Analgesia, Anesthesia, and Addiction Products, the NIH National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute’s Expert Committee on Hemoglobinopathies as a pain expert.
